OpenAI sets out an EU text-watermark plan, with limits spelled out

OpenAI said it will add an invisible statistical signal, called textGrain, to eligible ChatGPT and Codex text output in the European Union over the coming weeks. API customers globally can opt in for select models, while the feature will remain off by default in the API. The company also opened applications for access to its detector, initially limiting it to approved researchers and expert organizations.

The announcement is unusually clear that watermark detection is not proof of origin. OpenAI says shorter or constrained passages are harder to identify, and that editing weakens the signal: in its evaluation of 400-token passages, replacing 10% of words with synonyms reduced detection from about 92% to 66%; replacing 25% reduced it to 17%. The rollout is a provenance tool rather than a general answer to misinformation, and the detector’s limited initial access leaves its practical use to be established.

ChatGPT will test labelled visual ads during image generation

OpenAI also plans a U.S. test of visual ads during ChatGPT image generation later this month, TechCrunch reported. The first test will use an initial advertiser group; OpenAI says the placements will be labelled and separate from the image being made, and will not affect the assistant’s answers.

This is a business-model change rather than a model-capability release. TechCrunch reported that OpenAI is expanding advertising measurement and brand-suitability partnerships alongside the new format. The company has not made the eventual placement frequency or broader rollout timetable public, so readers should treat the October test as an experiment, not a settled interface policy.

Reflection previews Beam, but its headline results await independent testing

Reflection AI unveiled Beam, its first frontier open-weight model, according to the company announcement reported by TechCrunch. Beam is a text-only mixture-of-experts model with 501 billion total parameters and 23 billion active parameters; Reflection says it targets reasoning, coding and agentic work.

The company says Beam can match Z.ai’s GLM-5.2 on advanced reasoning benchmarks while using three to four times less inference compute. Those are provider claims, not independent measurements. TechCrunch also reported that Reflection expects to release weights and technical details later this month, so neither a public download nor a full technical report was available on October 5. That makes the launch notable, but leaves the efficiency and benchmark claims for outside evaluation.

GitLab changes the default model for its code-review flow

GitLab’s documentation records that its Code Review Flow default changed to Claude Sonnet 5.5 on the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform on October 5. The same documentation says model changes delivered through the GitLab AI Gateway can take effect regardless of a customer’s GitLab version, unless otherwise noted.

For teams using the managed flow, that matters as an operational change: a familiar review workflow can begin using a different default model without a conventional application upgrade. GitLab still lists model selection controls for some configurations, but administrators should check their own settings, outputs and policies rather than assuming a default swap preserves behavior in every repository.

New York City’s planned hearing puts local AI oversight on the agenda

New York City Council’s full Council was scheduled to convene on October 5 to examine AI risks, existing safeguards and potential legislative action. The Council’s September announcement said it had requested participation from leaders of Anthropic and OpenAI, and described the Committee of the Whole as a rarely used format for citywide matters.

The hearing itself does not create a rule. Its importance is procedural: it brings consumer protection, public safety, economic effects and local government use of AI into one public oversight forum. The Council’s pre-hearing notice did not establish what legislation, if any, would follow, so the useful next signal is the hearing record and any specific proposal that emerges from it.
